- Each student is required to present a paper
from the list of papers that will be handed out over the course of the
next few weeks. If there is another paper that you would like to
present from outside this list, that you think is relevant to course
and interests you more, please ask Prof. Cheatham and Glenn Holloway
for approval. The presentations are to be strictly under 30
minutes. Please budget your time accordingly. Apart from summarzing
the paper and explaining it to your colleagues, we expect you to give
your own comments on its relevance, utility, scope, competetiveness
with rival approaches, etc. Please sign up for a presentation slot
by Feb. 21 on the class schedule.
- Assignment #4:

of the class on which this paper is to be presented. Each student is
required to hand in a written critique, one to two pages long, for one
of the papers within the handed out list. This is not expected to be a
summary of the material in the paper. Rather, we expect you to
critique the paper on the importance and applicability of the topic,
the approach followed, the techniques resorted to, as well as contrast
it with other work and alternative perspectives on the topic.
- Course Project:

May 9th, 1997, at the beginning of class. Students are to configure
themselves into groups of three to five students, and choose a project
from the list of final project suggestions to be handed out by
Feb. 28. If a group would like to propose its own project, a two page
proposal is to be submitted to Prof. Cheatham by Mar. 14 for
approval. Each group will have to give a half hour presentation of
its work to the class, on May 2 and May 9. Please choose a slot before
Spring break.
