Lene Vestergaard Hau has received the Carlsberg Foundation’s Research Award from the Royal Danish Society of Sciences and Letters on October 6, 2011. The prize of 1 million kroner is awarded in connection with the 200 year anniversary of brewer J.C. Jacobsen, founder of the Carlsberg Breweries and the Carlsberg Foundation. One prize each in the Natural Sciences and the Humanities was awarded. The Carlsberg Foundation has been one of the absolute main funders of Danish research over the last century. Read more... |

Lene Vestergaard Hau was named '2011 Distinguished Alum' by Aarhus University, Denmark, on September 9, 2011 at the university's anniversary celebration. Hau received her PhD degree in physics from Aarhus University in 1991, and now, 20 years later, returned to the university to receive the title of 2011 Distinguished Alum. Lene Vestergaard Hau was named ‘World Dane 2010’ ('Verdensdansker 2010') by global network Danes Worldwide at the organization’s annual summer meeting, held at Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, Denmark, on 1 August 2010. Lene Hau was selected National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellow. The Department of Defense made the announcement on 25 January 2010. Only 11 distinguished university faculty scientists and engineers were picked from within all areas of science and engineering. Under the program, the DoD provides large, long-term grants to top-tier reserchers from U.S. universities to conduct unclassified, basic research that may significantly transform DoD's capabilities in the long term. | |||
Publication by graduate students Anne Goodsell and Trygve Ristroph with Professors Lene Hau and Jene Golovchenko in the April 2, 2010 issue of Physical Review Letters was selected as the cover story, as an Editor's Suggestion, featured in a Synopsis in Physics: the APS publication "spotlighting exceptional research", and picked as a Nature Research Highlight. Cold-atom and nanoscale science have each provided exciting new systems for study and applications. We report the first experimental realization of a combined cold atom-nanostructure system that represents a new paradigm at the interface of these two disciplines. Our article "Creation of Long-Term Coherent Optical Memory via Controlled Nonlinear Interactions in Bose-Einstein Condensates" by Rui Zhang, Sean R. Garner, and Lene Vestergaard Hau is in the 4 Dec. 2009 issue of Physical Review Letters. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 233602 (2009). Storing light for more than one second: We observe that a light pulse can be stopped and stored for 1.5 seconds in a Bose-Einstein condensate of laser cooled atoms. During this time, light could – under normal circumstances – travel to the moon. Read more... |

Graduate student Brian Murphy and Professor Lene Vestergaard Hau published the January 20, 2009 cover story of Physical Review Letters. The article, "Electro-optical nanotraps for neutral atoms," is also featured in the APS publication Physics - spotlighting exceptional research.The work represents the first merging of cold atom and nanoscale technologies, and shows that atoms can be trapped and cooled to extremely low temperatures with chip integrated nanostructures at room temperature. This has major importance for the field of quantum physics and technology, allowing for the creation of novel nano-optic devices and for fundamental investigations of quantum physics at the nanoscale.
